I spent the better part of the past 12 years riding on my mountain bike in the Don Valley. I was unhappy with the Don Valley mountain biking videos I’ve seen on YouTube so I set out to make my own. The Don Valley trails are built by other riding aficionados and more recently a small section is being managed by the city. These trails are my favourite thing about living in Toronto. Not many other places can boast about having so many trails right in the middle of the city. The trails even affect my decisions on where I live. Every time I’ve gone apartment hunting I’ve made a point of ensuring that the future apartment is close to a trail head.
The trails are constantly evolving too. They evolve with age. New sections replace eroded trails, new bridges and teeters are built to cross mud. Sometimes they are built just for fun and to test the rider’s ability. My favorite part is that it’s all free. You don’t get much more value than that. If anyone knows of another city with such a nice network in the city I’m all ears (I haven’t tried out Grouse mountain in Vancouver yet, though it’s a bit out of the way).
